GPSMAP 60CSx/GPSMAP 60Cx?

Pros and cons of each? What is the best for geocaching and general navigation? What are some other good gps devices?

My wife and I have a 60CS. We haven’t upgraded to the 60CSx model yet, but I am familiar with the features.

Obviously, the difference between a 60Cx and a 60CSx is the built-in sensors (compass and barometric altimeter). Is the S model worth it? This question gets asked a lot.

One camp says that it is much cheaper and more reliable to carry around a separate magnetic compass. This is true. (My wife and I always carry around a compass as an emergency backup, even though we own an S model. There’s nothing like being prepared.)

The other camp says that it is much faster and easier to use the built-in compass. This is also true. A GPS unit with a built-in compass can show you which way you are pointing at any time, even when you are standing still. (A GPS unit without a compass cannot do this. You have to move for it to know which direction you are moving.)

For general navigation, a built-in compass is nice, but not a necessity. However, geocaching without a built-in compass is just plain annoying. When you are geocaching, you want to follow the arrow on the GPS to get to the cache coordinates. When you are there, you are often standing around searching and looking some more at the arrow to see approximately where it’s supposed to be. The arrow won’t work when you’re standing still unless you have a built-in compass. Geocaching is faster, easier, and more enjoyable when you have a GPS with a built-in compass.

I’ve been ignoring the barometric altimeter. That’s because it doesn’t really add much. GPS already gives you an approximate altitude. A barometric altimeter just makes the altitude readings smoother and more precise. It’s not really a big deal.

The only cons to an S model is that the battery life is slightly less because of the compass and that you have to recalibrate the compass (spin around in one spot) every time you change batteries or travel a long distance. You can turn the compass off to save energy, but my wife and I never bother. Magellan has better built-in compasses that don’t need recalibration, but otherwise Magellan handheld units are far inferior to the 60Cx/60CSx series.

Other good GPS devices? For geocaching, the 60CSx is considered the top of the line. The new x models are very sensitive, which helps with reception in trees and brush. It has the desired built-in compass. In my humble opinion, there is nothing better than a 60CSx for geocaching.
