Best Gps Devices 2011
Gps navigation questions?
Can sum1 plz tell me everything you know abt gps navigation devices (Ill pick a best answer): What is the best brand to buy? Is there a fee for using them like there is on a cellular phone? How accurate r they? Have you ever gotten lost while using one? I plan on doing a lot of traveling in 2011 & Im not good with maps, Do u think I should purchase one? & anything else that u wanna add…feel free.
GPS itself is free, and is about 10M accurate usually, sometimes more or less depening on conditions, and if WAAS is available.
Most navigator manufacturers use copyrighted maps, which are extra (but optional) to buy for each update, usually 2 to 4 times a year. Some have Lifetime maps or subscription options. One map set is included, and some offer a free update, if the map on a newly purchased GPS navigator is older than the current available map.
Some offer traffic included, or for subscription, with a built in or separate traffic receiver (which receives data from an FM broadcast station). In 2012 that service is slated to be discontinued, in the USA at least.
You can get smart-phone GPS systems, which have no maps built in but you get them over the “network”, but you must subscribe to the wireless service.
I have not got lost, nor went where I shouldn’t have, as GPSes have lead people before.
I am very good with maps and addresses (A++ in geography)
I use GPS just as guidance, for a paper map and real directions provided by where I am going, or thoroughly researched online or otherwise. I also use POIs to see what services are around, such as fuel and food. I take what they literally say with a grain of salt.
