Calculate Gps Distance
Does lattitude and longitude factor in altitude?
Hello,
I am trying to calculate the distance say from the GPS coordinates I receive while in a plane (30,000 feet in the air) to my house (sea level). Can I use Haversine’s formula (see link below) to find the distance between my lat and long coordinates? Or is altitude not taken into account in lat and long coordinates? If not, do I need to convert to cartesian coordinates and calculate distance based on that? Thanks
altitude isn’t calculated from lat and long. lat and long are calculated from the center of the earth
The geodetic latitude (there are many other defined latitudes) of a point is the angle from the equatorial plane to the vertical direction of a line normal to the reference ellipsoid.
The geodetic longitude of a point is the angle between a reference plane and a plane passing through the point, both planes being perpendicular to the equatorial plane.
The geodetic height at a point is the distance from the reference ellipsoid to the point in a direction normal to the ellipsoid.

your thinking of having an x,y,z coordinates. where lat and long are just x and y.
your plane coordinates should be spherical, and you should try to convert that to cartesian.
