Dog Gps Tracking Chip
Tracking a Microchip?
I know this has to be possible because everything seems to be trackable these days. Here is the situation. My dog was stolen from my yard. She has a microchip and according to the company these chips are not a gps. Which is true but there is always was to do what they say can not be done. Some radio’s will pick up cell phone’s and some electronic devices will interfere with others. So, my question is…. is there anything that will pick up a pet’s microchip other than the scanner or anything that can be made to track the chip. From what I was told it works like a mirror image with the hand held scanner but when there is a will there is a way and I just need to find the way so I can find my baby because my heart is broken and I just want her home. If anyone can help figure this out please email me.
Sorry, not realistically possible.
Your cell phone is picked up by other devices because it’s a powerful radio transmitter, wonderful for traceability but the battery needs frequent charging.
When microchiping a pet the chip has to last at least 10 years without being touched. Even the best batteries will only keep a charge for 5 years and that’s only if they aren’t connected to anything.
Because of this the microchips used for pets don’t have any battery or other power source, they are powered wirelessly by the scanners that are used to read them. Because the radio signal has to get through the pets skin to reach the chip they have to use frequency that doesn’t travel very well through the air and so is normally only used for very short range applications.
All of this means that unless there is a strong radio transmitter at the correct frequency within a few inches of the microchip it is effectively just a small glass bead and undetectable by any electronic means.
You could in theory read/detect a microchip at a reasonable range if you put out massive amounts of radio power. The problem with that is even if such a system was available it would a big health hazard to anyone (or any pets) close to the transmitter.
If the dog was stolen then your best bet is to put pictures and flyers in all the local veterinary offices and pet supply stores. If she was stolen by someone to keep as their own then you have to hope for a vet scanning the chip and realizing that the person with the dog isn’t the owner. If she has been resold then the majority of people are honest, if they see that the dog has been stolen hopefully they will contract you themselves.
