Forerunner 301

Rechargeable lithium ion batteries?

I have a Garmin Forerunner 301 and it’s missing the AC adapter so I cannot charge it but it does have a usb port. What I don’t understand is why I need an AC adapter to charge it when a computer can do the same thing because both have a usb support system. Can someone explain to me why this may be the case?

USB 2.0 will supply 5V @ 0.5A. This is fine if your device needs a trickle charge. Once your Li-Ion has between discharged past a certain point, it requires more than 0.5A to initiate a charge cycle.

If you remember your basic chemistry, recharging a battery is reversing the chemical reaction, (ie. flow of electrons) so that you build up a potential difference (voltage) between positive & negative. Most AC chargers are rated at 1.0A to supply the necessary “threshold” current to initiate the charge.

The charge cycle should be inverted exponential, very fast at first and then slowing down to a trickle. Theoretically you could use your USB to charge your Li-Ion but it would take a lot longer than with the AC charger. The charge cycle would be very slow at first, then speeding up, and finally trickling.

You can try charging it from you computer, you won’t hurt anything. If that works but isn’t fast enough, then try an AC “wall-wart” for USB plugs. Something rated at 1.0A or higher should work, like an iPod travel charger.
