Should You Consider Using Garmin GPS Systems?
This post is going to present you with a review of Garmin’s main automotive GPS products, what their features are and how much they cost. Garmin is considered the industry leader in GPS systems, and I am also planning to compare these for their main competitors, Magellan and Tom Tom. This will give you the important information to select the perfect Garmin GPS to suit your needs in addition to your budget.
Before we begin, Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan are not the only three GPS manufacturers available on the market. There are plenty of others. These three, however, include the big three, representing probably 90% in the GPS sales. Garmin itself sells about 70% within the GPS systems sold.
Is it necessary to just think about these three manufacturers with the purchase of a GPS system? Definitely not! Explore all the other companies. The majority of them offer good products with competitive prices. Just as a private note, I just tend to stick to the major manufacturers whenever I purchase something. This way I recognize my purchase will be supported next year along with the next.

Before I mention Garmin products in particular, let’s talk a bit about GPS receivers in general–especially what their main features are.
The basic features of any GPS after-market automotive system include the following:
* Touchscreen display screen interface with 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional views
* Automatic calculation of the fastest route and the shortest path to your destination
* Database of plenty of pre-programmed destinations, or Points of Interest (POI’s)
* Pre-loaded with maps with the lower 48 United States
If this describes all you want, you may get this from Garmin for around $150! The Garmin nuvi 200 might be the perfect unit in your case. It can do all of the above and even more.
Tom Tom and Magellan likewise have competitive products at this cost bracket. The Tom Tom One and the Magellan Maestro 3100 are amazing introductory GPS receivers. They will do all of the above and a lot more, and both cost around $150.
However, if you want more, it’s not that expensive to have it!
For another $100 to $200, you can aquire a GPS receiver, which does all this:
* Wider 4.3-inch screen
* Saying street names with the spoken directions
* More Maps–Canada, Mexico, Europe
* Many more POI’s (what about 6 million?)
* Bluetooth, for hands-free calling
* Real-time traffic and weather (with subscriptions)
The Garmin nuvi 350 is capable of doing nearly all of this, although it only has the 3.5-inch screen. Right now the nuvi 350 runs about $200. Magellan’s 3250 is definitely their direct competitor towards the nuvi 350.
