Would my GPS work in another country?
I have a Garmin GPS and would like to take it on vacation, out of the country. I bought this GPS a year ago, would it work okay or do I have download extra maps?
Saying which Garmin you had would help us advise…
The GPS itself will work; it will identify your position and you can use that to mark your loation, return to it, navigate to other locations you’ve entered, etc.
What you’re not likely to have is map data, which would include streets, POIs, etc. If you have a Garmin that takes SD or MicroSD cards, my advice is to buy maps for vacations to foreign countries on card so you can resell them without the unlock hassles of the software.
(There’s a thriving business of these cards on ebay.)
Also note that the first time you turn your GPS on after the flight, it will be grumpy and may take up to 15 minutes to realize its new position.
