Garmin Nuvi 300 help?
My nuvi 300 is giving me the message “no map data available” when I try to go to the icons for inputting an address or for food, lodging hospitals… basically any location that I would have to input. My saved locations are however still there. I also noticed that I have no streets on the GPS only major highways, in other words, when you are in the city, it looks like you are in a field showing only the interstate. I have gone through the menu on the unit a million times thinking that a setting may need to be adjusted but to no avail. The system was working just fine until a week ago. I tried to go to the Garmin website and download updates but nothing on my GPS changed… did I miss the right download? I also noticed that the clock on the GPS is still 1 hour behind and did not adjust itself after daylight savings time kicked in. Any help is greatly appreciated.
It looks like the map file has been deleted or corrupted. If you connect the GPS to a computer you can open up file folders just like it were an external hard drive (think Flash Drive). When I bought my Garmin I backed these up to my computer. There should be a folder called Garmin, and an autorun.inf. Open the Garmin folder and you should see folders such as Diag, ExtData, GPX, Help, JPEG, etc. There will be a number of files as well. There should be several large files such as gmapbmap.img (20MB) and gmapprom.img (970MB). If these files are missing or corrupt, you wont have any maps.
I don’t recall if my Garmin NUVI 205w came with a DVD or not. I backed up all the folders/files to my computer and burned them to a DVD. Map updates are expensive. A “lifetime” update cost as much as my entire GPS!
You MIGHT get lucky and explain your problem to Garmin and they MIGHT send you a version of the files that were current to your GPS when you bought it. Likely they WON’T send you the latest maps but you never know.
I gave you the two major file names. If you use GOOGLE and know how to bit torrent you might get lucky as well.
