Garmin Gps Units
Can you give advice on buying portable GPS Units? Mio, Garmin, TomTom, etc?
I’m particularly interested in the Mio P550 because it has GPS AND wi-fi. Do all the necessary maps, etc come with it? Does the wi-fi connection work well, etc? Maybe having GPS and a wifi PDA in one unit is too good to be true, especially when it’s priced like a TomTom without wifi or PDA. I am about to become a sucker?
I have an etrex venture by garmin and it is great for the price (~$120). Only issue is the small antenna, overhead foliage can cause problems locking up to a Sat. My unit came preloaded with the waypoints for major citys and can track up to 12 Sats.
Additional garmin software can be purchased that will allow up/downloaded data to a computer…see if any third party software will work with the unit you plan to buy too. Be certain to check the memory available with the unit (can more be added?), the venture has a relatively small amount of memory, but since its display is BW and graphics are simple, not much memory is needed.
