GPS & Geocaching: Whats the best & cheapest GPS for me?
I’v been Geocaching [www.geocaching.com] for a while now, and i know your supposed to have a handheld GPS, but iv been using a car one!
Im looking for a very cheap, possibly second hand if its going to be reliable, GPS, preferably Garmin, also i would like it to be able to run the WhereIGo applications that are growing on the web now.
If anyone could suggest a good and cheap model, or can tell me a good place to look – street stores or online(prefered); i’d love you very much indeed!
If you want Wherigo, you’re going to have to buy either a Garmin Colorado or a Garmin Oregon, and those are very expensive units ($400+). You could also buy a used PocketPC/WindowsMobile device to run Wherigo. There aren’t many Wherigo cartridges out there right now, so you might just want to skip that requirement.
Since you already have an automotive unit, you can probably get away with just a basic handheld instead of getting one that will also do turn-by-turn directions. A basic cheap model is the eTrex H (it has to have the H) for $80. Monochrome screen and it can connect to your PC with the optional serial cable for easy waypoint uploads. If you want to get a little fancier, you can get the eTrex Venture HC for $115 that has 24MB of memory in case you want to load topo maps or road maps, and it has a color screen and connects via USB cable. The $160 eTrex Legend HCx will let you use a microSD card. You could also consider the GPSmap 60Cx and 76Cx, though those units cost more.
For retailers, I suggest going with GPSNOW, TigerGPS, Amazon, Wal-Mart, or NewEgg. Stores like Best Buy and Circuit City tend to overcharge for handheld GPS units.
