Gps Antenna Adapters
Can i use wireless antenna for Gps?
Given the fact that both antennas get dBi Gain for signals,
wireless operates on different signal 2.4Ghz 802.11G
and the signal gain would be 12-15 dBi for the wireless antenna
now the question
Could I use a Wireless antenna(30 Cm High signal Gain) for my GPS instead of A Gps Antenna
Regardless of the Connector type (use of N-Cable Male to F-Cable Male Adapter)
in theory it might work but i want to know all the details if possible
first of all, “dBi” is decibel gain isotropic. This is a theoretical gain figure.
The GPS has a built in patch antenna, if the receier has an antenna port/connector, you can use an external antenna.
You really cannot use a 2.4GHz antenna since the GPS system does not operae on 2.4GHz, the antenna is not reasonant, and would be in fact, present a signal loss.
If you do use an external antenna, you will need something that is polarized to see UP and not the horizon.
A heliax or a patch antenna is what you need.
Schematics have been published in “73 Amateur Radio” several years ago, before 73 went out of business.
I have used both the patch and the heliax with equal success, but new GPS receivers using the SiRF 2 or SiRF3 engine is hot enough to not require an external antenna.
