Should I be worried about letting my cat outside? What if shes stolen?
In few weeks im getting a pure white british short hair. Around my area white cats and rare and im paying a bit of money for her and now im worried about letting her out. I heard cats stay where ever they are fed? so what if some one likes the look of mine and decides they want a cute white cat??
I plan on micro chipping her but its not like its a GPS so its pointless unless someone finds her and takes her to the vets to be scanned.
How do others overcome this. I have never owned a cat before only dogs.
Oh Sarah, theres a LOT more to worry about outside than just cat thieves. Did u see the post on here from the person whose cat was shot and killed by a cat hating neighbor? Oh no, cats do NOT stay where they are fed. They are natural explorers. Make sure your cat is spayed and kept indoors at ALL times. I work at a cat shelter . OH my cat is dead, the people cry … it usually ALWAYS happened outdoors. OH but she loooooved it outside, they whine. NO , she did not looooove it outdoors she was CONDITIONED to go outdoors. Cats are natural explorers and very curious. They will explore paper grocery bags u leave opened on the floor, will go in ur oven if open, clothes dryer if left open (be careful) and any door that they can get past u to get into the next place. If it is the outdoors. the lazy owner quickly catches onto he doesnt have to buy kitty litter or do litter box duty (which we who love cats dont mind its what we do). to keep our cats safe. Then they say OO the cat loooves it outdoors… no the cat has gotten used to being put out and is conditioned to the outdoors. And the outdoors WILL NOT LOVE your cat. Cars, stray cats with diseases ur cat will catch, many fatal, fleas, ticks, worms. cat hating neighbors, getting shut into someones little used garage, shed or basement (a particularly awful way to die) as the cats dies of starvation slowly and you call, the cat hears but cannot come. Thats just for starters. Spay…keep inside, scratching posts, cat toys. the KONG company makes a toy u cn load up with cat treats and the kitty works (hunts) to get them out.. U R in for a real treat a cat is an awesome pet and easier to care for than a dog.. Go on line to a site called “for the love of cats” it is one of the YAHOO GROUPS, they can advise u on diet, cat care ,etc and are really nice folks.. Consider the life span on average of an outside going cat is estimated at 2 to 3 years if they are lucky.. inside 17 to 20 years. Quite a difference.. I had to learn the hard way. even living on a very quiet traffic free street my cat was run over and killed by a teen girl who had just gotten her license.. she couldnt help it the cat darted out in front of her.. she was just devastated she had 2 cats of her own she wouldnt even drive for about a month afterward… a hard lesson to me. and NO ONE thats a cat goes outside now and yes they can be retrained…U need to provide safe cat toys scraching posts. and a chair w cushion to look outside, a bird feeder outside that window is good if u can do that… so again good luck ur new cat sounds awesome… and again ur instincts are steering u right.. thanks for asking.
