Gps Direction Finder
Help finding the right GPS?
Am looking for a cheap GPS that will give driving directions and act as a point finder on a boat (intercoastals/rivers) and one that I won’t have to pay for any kind of memberships and expensive map upgrades to use.
Nearly ANY GPS with the correct base maps will work for you. All of them can position you very acturately. Since roads and rivers change over time you will have to occassionally get updated maps and you will have to pay for the maps but its a one time fee for the upgrade.
Garmin is still the leader in my mind for all GPS units but that is just my preference. They are one of the major industry leaders and just produce and support good products. Maps are always available as well as service.
If you want the “cheapest” method use a laptop or “pentop” computer, add an external GPS receiver/antenna and you can even find “Free maps” which will display your information. If your computer has bluetooth support even a small bluetooth GPS can drive the maps.
You can still use the computer for other uses. Holux makes some really nice very small receiver units that are very very accurate.
