I would follow the magenta line to stay on course, but I have a flight check coming up and they won’t let me use the magenta line. I only have the TRK, BRG, and DTK to stay on course, and that’s my problem! Whenever the numbers go further away in the simulator, I just get lost and off my course.
I don’t know if I should turn left or right to stay on course! I hate this.

You do know that there are aircraft that don’t even have GPS and can still navigate IFR, even fly full approaches!
Perhaps a little training without the GPS would be worth your time, really it would. Understanding what an old fashioned VOR/ILS head tells you makes flying easier even with GPS. You simply fly to the needle, as long as you know how to “set” the needle.
If the TRK moves right and the bearing is left, turn left, if the TRK moves left and the BRG goes to the right, turn to the right, it really isn’t all that difficult if you have the BASICS.
