Gps Eeepc
i want to go geocaching with my asus eeepc… what will i need? or is it even possible?
i found this usb gps plugin http://www.semsons.com/giusbgpsre65.html
it says no software… can i get software for geocaching? i really want to soooooo bad. what would be the cheapest, easyiest way to help locate geocaches? i dont have any big bucks lieying around, i could barely swolllow 100 bucks. give me the cheapest option to do this!
I had an eee pc and decided to sell it because it was only around 900 mhz and way to slow to really do anything on. I don’t suggest using this laptop for geocaching.
Don’t buy that dongle, it doesn’t even come with software.
Geocaching is something you need to be mobile to do, trying to carry around a small eee with a GPS dongle attached would really be more of a hassle than it’s worth.
There are better options… here are a few that I can think of.
Cheapest option: If you are on a budget, check eBay (or the internet) for an older handheld GPS reciever. I prefer Garmin, but that’s just me. You could get an etrex for pretty cheap ($50-$100), but you’d have to print out the pages with info. Or you could use your eee pc to save the pages of the caches you want to find and use your eee pc and handheld gps reciever together, this is kind of a pain, but it will work and you won’t have to use paper and ink to print stuff out.
I had a GPSMap 76 at one time and really liked the interface and controls, but still had to print or write out my geocaching clues. You could probably find one of those for pretty cheap.
Suggested option: What I really suggest is to save up your money (sell things, get a job, find a way to make money) and save up for either a Garmin Colorado or an Oregon. Again, you can save money by shopping for one online (eBay). (I started with the GPSmap 96 and GPS map 76, then the Colorado, and then the Oregon 400t.) Yes, a bit expensive, but either one will meet all your geocaching needs and make it a lot more fun. They both (Oregon or Colorado) even have the option to play whereigo cartridges which is something you could look into.
Don’t try to use a Nuvi for geocaching, you could, but a lower end Nuvi is made for road navigating, not geocaching.
As far as software for geocaching, check out geocaching.com and you will find what you need there for programs. With a membership, you can download geocaches directly to your pc or GPSr.
Another thing to consider is if you were to get one of the handhelds that I mentioned, you may need to spend a little bit more on map software. I really recommend getting the software on a plug and play SD card or micro SD card. This will help you avoid any confusion about loading the software since it is plug and play directly into the handheld unit.
I could really go on and on, but I hope this helps! Do your research, geocaching is a great hobby
