Is it really possible to do this? (Re: Hacking)?

My roomate has a friend who just left her boyfriend. She claims he is a super hacker that gets ip addresses of people’s electronic devices. She claims once he has the ip address, he can then remotely control the device ( turn on and off, Track by gps, get other additional ip addresses etc.) So she claims she discovered all these people he is supposedly monitoring, and according to her he is turning on cell phones, listening to people, turning on cell cameras web cams to watch women, etc. This freaked me out! Is this really possible or is she a psycho?

One or both of them is a liar. The first thing is that if a device is off, then it does not have an IP address. Devices only acquire an IP address when they’re turned on. Secondly, phones don’t have any function that would allow remote camera/audio access EVEN IF THE OWNER OF THE PHONE WANTED TO ENABLE IT. The functions just aren’t there. It’s like saying a hacker can hack into a computer and make it fly around the room. Computers can’t fly, so no hacker can accomplish such a thing.

EDIT: Dingo: Yes you can remote control computers. That’s because operating systems (such as Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux) have functions built into them for the purpose of remote control. Cell phones have no such function. There may be third party apps (such as those available on the iPhone App Store) to add that ability, but unless this person is stealing phones to load third party software, then it’s not possible. Even if he were stealing the phones, he’d have to know the person’s App Store or Marketplace password.
