Monitoring animals via GPS?

Does the technology exist where thousands of animals like cows on a farm can be monitored on via GPS?

Yes, it could be done several ways, but it would be expensive and not entirely practical or efficient. Some are true GPS and some are others types of similar technology.

The farmer would have to know what his priority motives are in selecting a method. There are systems that would check in when a cow crossed a boundary (to keep cows in range), systems that would check-in on a periodic basis (tracks overall herd movement), and systems that work like Lo-Jack or your pet’s microchip where you can type in that animal’s tracking number and find out where it is (good for inventory control).

GPS of a large population would require not only a lot of tracking devices, but also a rather sophisticated system for data management, like GIS software, receivers, etc. and quite a bit of training in GIS-IT. Livestock tend to stick together so it might make more sense to track a sample of a herd. Radio signaling would probably be a more cost-effective method on a relatively small space, like a farm. A radio signal won’t be as precise as GPS, but it would get you within a sight line of the animal, as opposed to precision of inches with GPS.
