Gps For Bicycle Riding
Sore knees from bicycle, what needs adjusted?
i just rode my new bike for the first real ride and I averaged 13.25 moving speed(according to My Tracks gps), i rode 7.6miles.. My bike is a Diamondback Edgewood LX 19″. I ride bikes a lot in the summer, I rode a Schwinn Miramar all last year, up to 17 miles one time. The position is different and I can go faster with this new bike, but the only problem is my knees and calves seem to be taking more of the strain than my thighs, is my seat too high or too low maybe.. I was told to be on my tippy toes when sitting down on the seat. My thighs are usually sore after I ride the Schwinn, but my upper calves and knees are sore right now…What do you think?

No it wasn’t the wisest thing you could have done. It is amazing how out of shape out butts and legs can get from just walking around. The legs and butt are primarily sore because you overdid a new exercise program. Liquid gel Advil, and a heating pad on low will help that. Getting back and riding a little each day will get you saddle fitness back too. BUT THE BEST THING for that os a good pair of padded cycling shorts, either road or mountain shorts,
Now for your knee. Your bike seat is way too low. When sitting in the saddle, your legs should almost be straight when the pedals are in the six o’clock position. You should not be able to touch the ground when seated. When you come to a a stop you must get off the seat, and straddle the bike. The low seat is what is causing the pain in your knee. So remember almost straight when seated and the pedals are at the lowest position!
THE OTHER MAJOR issue is that you were riding in too high (hard) of a gear. You should be ‘spinning’. yes like spin class… at a rate of 70 rpm with MODERATE pedal pressure. You shift the gears to maintain BOTH the spin rate and the MODERATE pedal pressure throughout your ride. YOU DO NOT want to be ‘mashing’, that is pedaling at a slow rate with too high (hard) off a gear. Spinning is the correct way to pedal. It allows the modern cyclist to do both speed and distance, with little fatigue.
If you don;t understand, use this forum and ask about spinning and shifting,. It is THE most important thing to learn in cycling.
