Question about GPS (Global Positioning System)?
My National History Day topic is the GPS and I would like to know how it was a new and different product at the time of its invention. If you have your own answer please tell me, or if you can provide a link to a website, that would be okay as well. Preferably, i would like online books, news articles, magazine articles, etc.
Despite what many people may think, GPS was not invented in 2006 with the mainstream boom of the personal navigation device (PND). GPS technology, as available to everyday consumers, began in 1989 and was readily available in 1994. The great thing about GPS technology is that it works everywhere on the globe and can tell you, within a certain degree of accuracy, exactly where you are at any given time. In 2000, when Selective Availability was officially turned off, a civilian with a GPS unit could obtain his/her exact location on the surface of the earth within a matter of 50 feet with no problem. Never before had anyone been able to pinpoint a location with such precision. As the technology has improved and additional satellites have been introduced into the constellation, positional accuracy has since improved to within 10 feet. Sure, a PND can tell you where to turn and how to get to a restaurant across town, but GPS provides so much more to everyone around the globe. Boaters can keep track of their favorite fishing spots; runners and mountain bikers can train against their best times on any track or trail imaginable; hikers can always find their way out of the densest forest or the most barren dessert; aviation highways have become more defined and much safer; even golfers can keep track of their score and figure out exactly how far they drove the ball. GPS technology is driving the movement for LBS (Location Based Services) in the mobile phone industry. Only time will tell how this amazing technology becomes even more entwined in our daily lives and enriches us with the knowledge of where we are, where we have been and where we will soon arrive!
