Choosing A GPS Unit Can Be A Bit Tricky
Many GPS units are loaded with enough features to make smartphones look inadequate when they’re used for GPS purposes. And, all those features can make choosing a GPS navigator a bit on the tricky side. Smartphones can be helpful as GPS navigators even while you’re driving your vehicle, but depending on which model you buy, a dedicated GPS device can give you a lot more of the type of features that will reduce your frustration as well as save time and gas. A TomTom GPS should be a safe choice because TomTom is one of the top brands on today’s GPS market. However, you’ll still need to decide which particular TomTom unit to buy. Each TomTom GPS belongs to a particular family of devices, and the series numbers could lead to some confusion if you’ve never bought one of the TomTom GPS navigators before. A quick look at two of the most popular TomTom series of GPS devices could help you buy the right unit without spending too much.
TomTom VIA Series
The TomTom VIA series are the newest members of the TomTom car navigation category and should be considered over the older XL and XXL devices. If you see any attractive XL and XXL deals, consider looking at the VIA ones first because although XL and XXL devices are cheaper, you get more from a VIA device without adding a significant amount. To start things off, all of these devices in this series have Advanced Lane Guidance so you get that extra assistance in the highway. The feature will guide you to the right lane so you won’t miss an exit. It also has the Eco Route feature which comes up with the most fuel efficient route to ensure maximum savings. The IQ Routes feature is still available if you want to reach a destination quickly.
Some VIA models have 4.3-inch displays, while others have 5-inch displays. You’ll be able to tell by simply looking at the second digit. Although it has a 4.3-inch display, the TomTom VIA 1505TM is a nice inexpensive device. It will give you access to lifetime map updates that ensure that your GPS is using the latest map content. You also get lifetime traffic updates so you won’t encounter sudden traffic delays on your planned routes.
The TomTom GO Family
TomTom’s high-end models are part of the TomTom GO series, although some GO units, like the TomTom GO 2435TM, are affordably-priced. You do need to be careful when you’re comparing the TomTom GO 2435TM to the TomTom VIA 1435TM because their features and specifications are very similar. The big difference between the two units is the touchscreen on the GO 2435TM. It allows multi-touch gestures, a handy feature if you check the maps frequently.
If you don’t need this enhanced touchscreen, going for the TomTom VIA 1435TM will save you some money. Both units have voice recognition and are able to understand multiple commands. If you’re willing to buy a GPS unit that costs more than $250, you’ll be able to get a TomTom GO unit that has LIVE features. Then, you’ll get current fuel prices, weather reports and other real-time information.
