Mountaineering: Do you think is it a good idea to have a GPS as a mountain guide?
please answer if you have experience in high mountain.
Hi mates.
I’will climb a 5200metters mountain here in Mexico in January. A friend of one friend of mine, will guide us, because he is a profesional retires mountaineer. So we are not going to spend in hiring a guide. But I want to climb more times in the future. So I plan to register the position every 5 minutes and then in the future use my GPS yo go again.
Note. The mountain is Iztaccihuatl, is not a difficult, and it is not necesarry to hang from ropes and thinks like that.
A GPS is not a substitute for a good map and compass skills and mountain sense.
I’ve personally never found a need for one despite having access to one. Consider that a GPS’s accuracy is limited to around 40ft and only gives accurate readings if you are moving, which you might not be able to do. On a mountain 40ft is the difference between a safe route and a cliff.
Please don’t think that you can mark the way points and retrace you steps after being guided once.
What I DO think is worthwhile to have mountaineering is a Personal Locator Beacon. This little device will help rescue crews locate you if you are in trouble. But, again, this is no substitue for skill or a guide.
