GPS compatability help ?
I want to go geocashing i was wondering if this GPS is compatable with the geocashing website cordinates. i really need to know before the action ends. It is the GARMIN iQUE 3600 PALM GPS
I have not gone GeoCaching, but I have friends who are into that. I have a Garmin Nuvi 660.
There are 3 common popular formats for displaying coordinates. If you look up an address on http://geocoder.us/ it will display the information to you in all 3 (having said that, often this web site is slightly off because it tends to give you the coordinates of the nearest intersection).
Back in the day, they divided the earth into 360 degrees. Each degree was then divided into 60 “minutes”. Each Minute was divided into 60 “seconds”. Hearafter I’ll call this DDD-MM-SS for shorthand.
Computers find it much easier to just use degrees. Anything less than a degree is simply put after the decimal place. Let’s call this DDD.DDDDDD for shorthand. This format is easier for computers to use (so things like http://maps.yahoo.com/ use it – if you bring up a map and then click somewhere to reposition the center of the map, you can see the lattitude / longitude of the map’s center in the URL, expressed in this format).
A format that is (for reasons that are beyond me) popular is degrees followed by minutes with a decimal place. So DDD-MM.MMMM.
For example, let’s look at the White House, at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, in Washington D.C.:

This makes no sense to me, but as I understand it, the format that is most popular for GeoCaching is DDD-MM.MMMM.
My Garmin Nuvi can be configued to use any of these 3. I don’t know about the model you have referred to. If you can multilpy or divide by 60, you can easily convert between these formats (which means your GPS’s CPU can do it easily too). Whatever notation GeoCaching sites you use, you’ll proably want to set that as your default format. I use DDD.DDDDDD because I can look it up on more places on-line, but that is just me. I’m not going GeoCaching. I look up street addresses on my Garmin and only enter coordinates when a given address isn’t there (and then I’m usually looking on a map program, like Yahoo!Maps and am guestimating the GPS coordinates – if I try to look it up on-line, I usually get the same results as looking it up on my Garmin – they probably draw from the same sources of information).
