Does a Portable car GPS really work? and is it accurate?

I live in houston, TX and i want to drive west TX….Odessa, TX to be exact… I plan on buying a Portable GPS and diving there, so I need to know if its accurate or will it leave me in the middle of no where ? Im really bad with directions, so Any answer is greatly appreciated ♥
oh and i get lost easily lol…so i have to know how accurate it is please
