What is the sound my speedometer is making coming from?
I drive a 1997 Subaru Impreza Outback. A week or so ago, when I got above about 20 mph, a harsh squeal/buzzing sound was coming from somewhere in the dash. It would stop under 20 mph. After 20, it would increase in volume and pitch until I got above 65 or so, and it would die out. At 65, the needle was bouncing around a little, but as I continued driving on the highway, it was moving less sporadically as as time went on until it settled right onto my actual speed, which was confirmed by my GPS.
I know that it is an eddy-current speedometer. However, it seems like there is some kind of air leak going on. There are two screws on either side of the needle axis, and around those screws, the surface of the speedometer has bubbled up, as if there is pressure there and it is leaking. Is that related?
Do I need to worry about this? Would it be a lot to fix?
Being trained to calibrate and repair eddy-current relays in power stations, I’ll throw my two cents in. Your theory of air leakage seems very unlikely. It seems much more likely that a bearing has gone bad in the speedo, causing excess friction, the noise you’re hearing, and excess heat which caused the bubbling you saw. If you feel confident that you could take the dash apart and put it back together, just order another speedo and replace it. If not, take it to a dealer and pay extra to have it replaced. Either way, ignoring it will simply delay the inevitable death of your speedo.
