Finding Latitude and Longitude?
Something I have wanted to do for a while is be able to calculate my latitude and longitude. I mean, before we had computers and satellites that tell us this information, people could find their latitude and longitude. (I’ve been interested in this ever since seeing this clip on the TV show NUMB3RS a while ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLKpGnSnyGk )
Something like this scenario:
I am stranded somewhere, nowhere near a computer with internet access, or other electronics, and all I have is a ruler (or possibly a dial-caliper, for more accurate measurements), a protractor (to measure angles), paper, pencil, a watch (I am fairly sure you need something to measure time intervals with), a book with sin; cos; and tan values in it, and any other simple things you can find outdoors (rocks, sticks, etc.), how could I find my latitude and longitude?
(if you need more items, you can add them to the list, but no items that would require a satilite (e.g. GPS, Cell Phone, etc.).

You could make a crude sextant from your protractor and a plumb bob (a weight on a string), and your modern watch might (I suppose) be accurate enough to substitute for a marine chronometer.
The sextant alone is adequate to find your latitude, but for longitude you need a chronometer or other accurate timekeeper. (If you haven’t read the fascinating book “Longitude”, I suggest you do so.)
