Gps Ski Maps
GPS unit for backcountry skiing?
i do a lot of backcountry skiing in vermont, and i’m looking for a gps unit that i can use to map my routes through the woods and upload into google earth. which makes/models would be the best for this? i want something that will map paths, not just hold waypoints. any recommendations?
Look for a GPS that accepts TOPO maps. For example, many Garmin maps will take custom map sets that include additional data – Nav aids, Topo and the like. I’d also make sure it takes AA batteries. More and more models are using custom batteries – AA can’t be beat (or AAA) when you’re in the middle of nowhere and the batteries die. I always carry an extra couple of sets.
Another nice feature as a built in altimeter – better models use 3D GPS and a barometer.
