Gps Vs Gis

career choice, small vs. large company?

I work in the GIS/Engineering field for a small (7 person) company in Ohio and do a lot of things – surveying, basic civil engineering, GIS (mapping) and just got our license to sell GPS units. Been here for about 5 months and make in the $30k range. My boss has lots of ideas and the company has lots of potential but I am worried with the current economic situation. I interviewed for a national company that wants me to move to Texas for a year doing similar work for about the same pay, but with the potential to make in the $60k range in a year if I do well. So I am wondering if I should jump ship and take the new job or stay and try to develop the small company. Both have their positives, larger company more of a guaranteed potential but smaller company I would learn more, possibly make more if we can find our niche. Plus I’m not sure if I want to stay in the industry but for the time being I have to pay the bills. Any suggestions or ideas, any people work in these industries?

I’ve worked in a company with 7 people, and I’ve worked for one of the big insurance companies. I much preferred working for the larger company.

I got better money, more benefits, more time off, and there were people other than me who could do my job. I didn’t feel like it was my responsibility to do everything for the owner like I did at the small company.

While you might be succeptible to job layoffs at a big company, small business are much more likely to fold than a big company, so job security generally isn’t that big of deciding factor.
