Handheld Gps Games
I’m thinking of buying an Iphone for geocaching instead of a Garmin Oregon 550T. Opinions?
I have Verizon Wireless and don’t plan on changing my provider. I don’t plan on using the Iphone for a phone. I plan on using it for a GPS device, Camera, MP3 player, Video Player, Picture Viewer, games, ect….., but I have no intentions of using it for a cell phone.
The Garmin 550t is the top of the line touch screen handheld GPS. It also has a 3.2 camera built into it. I can pick up one of these for about $500.00, but I think I can get an Iphone cheaper and put the geocaching app onto it and more.
They apps are marginally good enough for finding a cache, but please avoid using a GPS enabled phone to hide a cache. Several caches that were hidden and then posted with coordinates from a GPS phone combo have ended up with serious positional errors. One nearby (to me) cache, when first posted, was eventually determined to be almost 200 feet from the listed coordinates. My phone has a caching app, but it is strictly a back-up for when I’m in an area without a dedicated GPS and I’d like to hunt a cache, and I wouldn’t think of using it for hiding a cache.
One other consideration: most dedicated GPS units are much more sturdy and weather resistant than a phone. If you’re in heavy brush hunting a cache in the rain, a phone is probably not what you want to be using.
