Can employers track company cars on the employees personal time?
I have a company car that I was not given a choice but to take and pay a personal usage charge for. They are now putting GPS locators in them, which during work I have no problem with. But on MY time I don’t want them tracking me. They are taking money out of my paycheck that I could use to buy a new car but can’t because they are taking it. Is it legal for them to track my on my personal time? Since I don’t have a choice but to pay the PUC I can’t afford to buy a new car for personal use. I sold my personal car (for a $6000 loss) when they forced us to take the company cars in the first place.
Since I am already living pay check to pay check, I couldn’t afford the personal usage fee AND a car payment for a personal car. So I sold it so I could pay the bills.
I think that so long at the GPS is enabled they ‘can’ track you. However, they absolutely CANNOT fire you for going to certain places on your own time. I’d say just to mess with them, go drive to a strip club and sit outside for a couple of hours… then maybe go to a gay bar in that evening. Think of some really strange places and just ‘park’.
If they bring it to your attention, then perhaps you can bring up this issue about tracking you on your own personal time.
