Gps Receiver For Laptop

Can someone pleas explain GPS equipment to me please?

Hello. I have just discovered Google Earth and notice that for $20 a month (even though I am British) you get some sort of upgrade that allows you to input GPS data to a Google Earth image.

As far as I can tell a GPS handheld is what I’d need to do this, which looks like a walkie-talkie with a screen. I’ve had a quick look and see roughly £200 is the norm depending on which factors your handheld measures.

I also, however, saw a ‘GPS receiver’ which looks as if it plugs in to a laptop like a small aerial. Am I to presume then that you can transmit between the handheld and the laptop wirelessly with a receiver? Or does it not work this way?

Any help appreciated!

GPS comes in several different forms. There are stand alone receivers with displays for the maps etc. Like the Garmin C330 or the Tom Tom units. These work all by themselves with interfaces which allow updating maps etc.

There are units designed to use with Map Programs which run on your laptop or pentop. These units are simply the GPS receiver with no display at all. Some are wired and use either the serial or usb interface to your laptop. Some are wireless and use bluetooth wireless to communitcate to the laptop (or even some cell phones these days or even PDA units).

All any of them do is get the correct position information (latitude/longitude) from the overhead satellite system and convert that data into computer readable code so that you can display that position information. How and on what you display that data is fully up to the users and the manufacturers to determine.

There are units available for in car dash mounting, portable use, boat use (with marine charts), aviaition use (with aviation charts) and even some with just simply lat / long displays with no maps at all. Some look like small “computer mice” some look like full pentop computers. There is a wide range and a wide choice to be made. All will tell you very acurately where it is located! It will even tell you how fast you are moving and in what direction.

Here is a great resource about the systems.

And here are some GPS receivers which simply connect to your computer for using the computer to display maps and position.

many of these are less than $50.00 US

Oh and there are many map programs that don’t need any monthly fees paid at all! Even Microsofts Trips and Streets etc work with GPS units. The GPS unit has no monthly fee.
